I was a member of the Toronto Food Policy Council in 1990-97 and also worked on community-based food initiatives such as Community Kitchens. While discussing possible locations for future Community Kitchens, somebody asked, “You mean in Canada every home has a private oven?”

We then heard about Community Ovens, where people will bring their dough to bake in an outdoor, wood-fired, Community Oven. As we began to dream, local community organizers started to build and in 1995, the Community Oven at Dufferin Grove Park was built.

I started my work as Community Minister at Davenport Perth Community Ministry on June 15, 2014. Looking outside the window of the Community Ministry’s office, I see this Community Oven that was built seven years ago. What a delightful view!
