Johl Ringuette is a friend of Davenport Perth Community Ministry. We shared dreams of roots and routes at Davenport that gave birth to Tasting Davenport Routes in 2017.
He invited us to a harvest on Saturday September 8, an “Urban Agriculture Day” at the Three Sisters traditional Indigenous garden at Ashbridges Estate. Mohawk Red Flint Corn, Cherokee Trail of Tears Beans, squash plus a beautiful taste of 3 Sister Stew and Corn Bread.
Johl started a new network called Ojibiikaan, that means “root” in Anishinaabemowin. OJIBIIKAAN INDIGENOUS CULTURAL NETWORK “is about strengthening indigenous roots in Toronto, the GTA, and surrounding First Nations communities through knowledge exchange and land-based food projects.”
Ojibiikan now has four gardens: one at Ashbridges Estate, one in our neighbourhood, one at Christie Pits area, one at the Crawford Lake. Johl wrote, “We are creating very beautifully shot clips for all our gardens with the hopes and prayers of inspiring many folks to volunteer and participate in our movement of Indigenous food systems revitalization by giving back the land!!”
With gifts of heirloom heritage varieties of corn, beans and squash, it is our hope that Davenport Perth Community Ministry will plant three sisters in May 2019.
